Transportation engineers earn $40,000 a year on average, according to a study published by the American Association of Machinists and Aerospace workers.
Transportation engineers are the backbone of the FAA and have worked in almost every major air carrier in the country since the 1950s.
In recent years, the FAA has been trying to bring down the amount of money needed for maintenance, which includes replacing and maintaining airplanes.
But in an effort to make maintenance less expensive, the Federal Aviation Administration has reduced the number of hours that maintenance technicians are required to work per year.
As a result, the average maintenance technician salary dropped to $36,000 last year from $42,000 in 2013.
But that doesn’t mean that all maintenance technicians can be replaced by computer-assisted technicians, who are cheaper than the automated ones that currently make up the majority of jobs at major air carriers.
While the FAA said in a statement that the “most common reason for an applicant to seek an FAA maintenance technician position is a desire to hire a qualified technician to assist with the maintenance of a particular aircraft, not all applicants are seeking the replacement of a technician,” it said that the FAA’s policy for maintenance technicians is “to ensure the continued viability of the maintenance and airworthiness programs.”
In the last two years, there has been a decrease in the number and salary of maintenance technicians that are available.
In February, the Aviation Industry Association of America reported that the number has dropped to 814 from 1,063.
In March, the AIA said that there were only 464 maintenance technicians available.
The AIA has been working to recruit more maintenance technicians, as well as hiring an additional 200 more to support the FAA.
A spokesman for the FAA told Politico that the agency would hire an additional 100 maintenance technicians to support maintenance for Boeing’s 737 MAX fleet in 2017, and an additional 300 technicians for the 737 MAX in 2018.
“We are actively recruiting the next generation of technicians and we’re working with industry and the private sector to ensure that maintenance of the 747 fleet remains a top priority for the aviation industry,” John Hynes said.
The FAA also announced last year that it would expand its fleet of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.
The agency said that it was hiring new maintenance technicians in order to increase maintenance for the 747 and 777 fleets.
