The number of job openings is climbing, according to job listings from job-search firm Zillow.
The firm estimates that there were about 2.6 million job openings for engineers and 3.4 million for mechanical engineers in August.
It says the numbers will likely grow in the months ahead, but only because of a surge in job seekers looking for new work.
The US has nearly 20 million engineering jobs, or roughly 3.5% of the jobs in the country.
But while engineers and technicians are being counted as engineers in the official jobs census, engineers in general are not.
Engineers who work in engineering departments are counted as general mechanicals or mechanical engineers.
General mechanicals and mechanical engineers have the same job titles.
General and special mechanical engineers are not counted as such.
Zillows report that the number of openings for these two job categories jumped in August to about 3.8 million.
That is an increase of about 8,000 from the same month last year.
Zellow says that is due to people looking for other roles or looking to start a new job.
Mechanical engineers have also been the focus of recent national attention.
Engineers, along with other job-seekers, have been trying to figure out how to get hired at the next level and whether to move to a higher paying job.
That has led to an increase in interest in engineering jobs from job seekers, Zillower says.
“As we saw last month, engineering and technical jobs are hot right now,” Zillowed CEO Paul Bresson told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.
“The numbers are very encouraging.
It looks like engineers are on the rise and they’re being recognized for their accomplishments.”
Bressons research indicates that engineers have seen their jobless rate decrease in recent years.
“It’s important to remember that people who have a high jobless rates are generally those who have been on the sidelines for some time,” he said.
Engineers’ growing importance to the economy is also evident in the number and quality of engineering and engineering related jobs.
According to ZillOW, the number, number and number of engineering jobs rose in August from the previous month to nearly 3.6m.
The jobless data does not show which engineering jobs were created or lost during that period.
Zilliow says it is too soon to know exactly how much of the rise in engineering job openings can be attributed to job seekers taking new positions or because the number was higher than the number expected to be during the month.
“We do not have an estimate yet of how many engineering positions were created in August,” Zilliows research director, David Schallert, said in a statement.
“However, the percentage of engineering openings that were created, or lost, was much higher than our previous estimates for August.”
Schallers research indicates more than half of the increase in engineering openings can likely be attributed the strong job market in the last year or so.
Ziliow’s report does not provide a full picture of engineering job creation in August, because the firm only looked at job openings within the last 12 months.
However, the company says there were roughly 1.5 million engineering positions created in the first nine months of the year.
In the next 12 months, there were 1.3 million engineering openings, 1.2 million engineering job opportunities and 947,000 engineering job positions for technical, manufacturing and service occupations.
The AP has requested a copy of Zillowing’s research report and has not been able to confirm that the firm is right in its estimates.
A spokeswoman for the US Bureau of Labor Statistics told the AP that the bureau did not receive Zillowitz’s report until late last month.
ZILLOW’s research is based on interviews with job seekers across the US and interviews with other firms.
Zillerow did not release the results of its own research.
Zillaow does not make predictions for how many jobs will open in the coming months.
The company’s research does show that engineers and technical job seekers are increasingly seeking positions that require specialized skills.
In August, the jobs market for engineers showed strong demand for advanced manufacturing skills, such as welding and machining.
Mechanical engineering jobs also are being added.
“Engineering is a growing job,” Bressones research director said.
“But it’s important that we continue to understand the job market, and we continue looking for opportunities to increase engineering jobs.”
