Mechanical keyboards have a long history in the world of manufacturing, but they are no longer cheap or simple.
That’s why Amazon has partnered with the online marketplace Mechanical Turk to offer them to buyers in the U.S. and Europe.
“It’s a great platform to get mechanical keyboards, but it’s also one that we want to make available to anyone who wants to buy a mechanical keyboard,” says Mark Lehr, senior vice president of business development for Mechanical Turk.
“We’ve built an experience that allows people to get a mechanical keyboards in as cheaply as possible.”
Mechanical Turk, which launched in December 2017, has over 2 million registered users and has built a large network of Mechanical Turkers around the world.
“In a world of cheap labor and a lack of knowledge, Mechanical Turk has always been a great resource for a lot of people,” says Lehr.
Mechanical Turk is the largest marketplace for keyboard-making equipment in the Americas, and it has more than 5 million registered Mechanical Turk users, which is roughly 20 percent of the global population.
Mechanical keyboards are typically made of wood or plastic, and many are sold as a separate product.
Lehr says that the idea of selling mechanical keyboards online is “really a bit of an odd one,” but he says that Amazon Mechanical Turkeys are now offering mechanical keyboards at competitive prices.
Mechanical turk is Amazon’s attempt to build an online marketplace that is easy to use for both mechanical and non-metallic keyboard buyers.
Mechanical Turks buyers can purchase mechanical keyboards directly from the Mechanical Turk site, or they can create their own Mechanical Turk account and pay a small fee to receive an additional 10% discount on the price of the keyboard.
MechanicalTurks prices range from $20 to $40, depending on the type of keyboard and the quantity of parts needed to make it.
Leahr says that MechanicalTurk is not yet able to offer MechanicalTurkeys directly to customers in the United States, but he hopes to soon.
Mechanical keys have been popular with consumers in recent years because of their low price and their durability.
In 2018, Amazon sold 3 million MechanicalTurkers, and Amazon says that it is on track to sell 30 million MechanicalKeys by the end of 2019.
Lehre says that customers are increasingly interested in buying mechanical keyboards because they are cheaper and easier to make.
